CD-ROM Recording
NEW LOWER PRICES! and free gold-on-gold disc upgrade!
For less than the cost of a 200MB SyQuest disk you can store over 600MB on a CD-ROM. CDs have a life span of more
than 100 years, making them the ideal medium for archiving and storing information. With CD-ROM readers on most
computers, it's also the perfect means for distribution. Whether you're going to distribute for commercial,
promotional, or personal reasons, CD-ROMs provide convenience unsurpassed by any other medium.
D&W Media Productions is proud to announce that we can now produce CD-ROMs usually overnight. We can master your CD from Iomega ZIPs, 51/4" (44, 88, and 200MB) SyQuest cartridges, or just about any SCSI or IDE device. Plus, D&W Media
Productions will meet or beat any advertised CD mastering or copying price. We even warranty the CD-ROMs that we
master*!

CD-ROM Formats
Macintosh HFS (hierarchical file
system)
This disc format is designed to run on Macintosh computers and takes advantage of the Macintosh O/S. It works
basically like any other Macintosh volume would.
- File names can be 31 characters long.
- File and folders may have custom icons.
- There is no limit on the number of folders.
- Each file can be tagged with comments, labels, file types, and creator.
- Aliases may be used to link to files anywhere on the disc.
The CD-ROM can be created to open folders when inserted. This disc structure is determined by content not the
limitations of an operating system.
This disc is compatible with Macintosh only.
ISO 9660
This disc is the result of an effort among manufactures to create a disc that could be used in all computers. Files
stored on the disc can be from the Macintosh, PC, UNIX and more.
- In order to be compatible with the Microsoft operating systems, file names must not be more than eight
characters long with the option of adding a dot and three more characters (filename.123).
- ISO 9660 discs are also limited to eight directory levels deep.
- File names can only contain letters A-Z, numbers 0-9 and the underscore.
This format is popular when creating for DOS, Windows and UNIX. Because of its serious limitations, it is not used
much of the Macintosh.
Hybrid HFS-ISO
Frequently you may have files that can be read on both platforms. Examples would be tiff and EPS images, txt and RTF
files, Quicktime digital video files and Macromind Director movies. These files can be placed on the CD-ROM once
and then two directories are created to access them. Let me give you an example:
I have a portfolio that I would like to place on a CD-ROM. Since some of the machines that will use this CD are
Macintosh, and others will be Windows, I can place all the files on one Hybrid CD-ROM.
- When this CD is mounted on a DOS or Windows computer these three file names will show up.
- old_fath.tif
- thefalls.mov
- player.exe
- When this CD is mounted on a Macintosh computer these three files names show up.
- Old Faithful Scan
- Yellowstone Falls movie
- Multimedia Player
Both the movie (.mov) and the scan (.tif) may be shared by both the Macintosh and the PC. The programs (Player and
.exe) cannot be shared since they are platform dependant.
Audio CD
This CD-format is the kind you buy in any music store and will play on your home, car or portable CD player. The
music must be saved CD-quality (which means 16bit, 44.1 kHz stereo sound) to either an AIFF or SoundDesigner II file.
Mixed Mode
A mixed mode CD is one that has both computer data as well as CD Audio. The first track on the CD contains Mac HFS,
ISO 9660, or Hybrid ISO-HFS and the following tracks are music tracks. When this type of a CD is played on a standard
CD player the first track simply will not play.
Multisession
The multisession CD-ROM allows you to write to the same disc multiple times. In order to read these multisession
discs you must have a Macintosh with a multisession CD-ROM drive and install the Toast Multisession Mounter (more information about Toast Multisession
Reader).
